Dan Jones, a 56-year-old from Utah, began noticing subtle changes—forgetting notes while playing the bagpipes and relying more on to-do lists. These small hiccups led to a life-altering dementia diagnosis. But instead of surrendering to the disease, Dan became part of a pioneering clinical trial that asked a simple question: Can lifestyle changes help slow or reverse early brain aging?

He overhauled his diet, trading in red meat and sugary foods for whole, plant-based meals, starting daily meditation, prioritizing sleep, and exercising consistently. Just months in, his mental fog started to lift, memory stabilized, and he returned to playing music in public. By July 2022, he was marching in parades again.

What the Study Revealed

The clinical trial, led by the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, followed 51 participants with early Alzheimer’s symptoms. One group continued life as usual. The other took on an intensive program focusing on:

- Regular aerobic and strength-based exercise
- Daily mindfulness practices
- Emotional support sessions multiple times per week

Results showed that 71% of participants who made these changes improved or maintained cognitive function, while none in the control group improved, and nearly 70% declined.

Tools That Track How Fast Your Brain Ages

Researchers are now using AI and medical imaging to estimate brain age—an advanced way to understand how the brain’s condition compares to a person’s actual age. According to Dr. Andrei Irimia from USC, MRIs can monitor specific regions, like the cortex and hippocampus, to calculate whether the brain is aging faster than expected.

This technology doesn’t just show where someone is, but how their brain reacts over time to improved habits—or harmful ones.

Faster brain aging is strongly linked to a higher risk of dementia.

And the science doesn’t stop at scans. Several companies are developing blood tests that measure RNA markers to estimate brain age. One of them, NeuroAge Therapeutics, offers a comprehensive package—including a brain MRI, genetic screening, and cognitive tests—at a premium price. The idea? To help people act early, before symptoms begin.

However, experts like Stanford’s Dr. Tony Wyss-Coray urge caution, saying these tools need more rigorous validation. Many are still not FDA-approved for widespread use among healthy individuals.

Early Action Makes a Difference

Dr. Dean Ornish, who led the Alzheimer’s lifestyle study, stresses that intervening earlier may require fewer drastic changes to slow brain aging. The goal is not to reverse time, but to delay or prevent the decline that often comes with it.

For some, even 25 minutes of moderate exercise weekly—as shown in another study—can positively impact brain volume. Bigger brain size has been linked to sharper thinking and reduced dementia risk.

3. Mindfulness - Daily practices like meditation, stretching, and breathwork help reduce stress and improve clarity.
4. Connection - Emotional support from loved ones or group sessions plays a critical role in cognitive resilience.

These changes aren’t just for those diagnosed with memory issues—they can benefit anyone looking to keep their brain sharp for longer.

Why Your Brain’s Health Matters

Access to tools that estimate brain age may soon give individuals the opportunity to act before cognitive decline becomes noticeable. Dan Jones never took any diagnostic tests before his dementia diagnosis. Looking back, he says he would’ve started making changes years earlier if he had known.

As these technologies improve and become more accessible, they may redefine how people think about aging, not as something to fear, but something they can better prepare for.

Slowing Brain Aging Starts With Daily Choices

Aging is inevitable, but the speed at which the brain declines isn’t set in stone. The latest science points to a powerful message: how you live matters. While blood tests and MRI scans may one day help track brain aging in real time, the core strategies—what’s on your plate, how often you move, and how well you manage stress—remain essential.
